Post graduation (MDS) in Oral Medicine & Maxillofacial Radiology is a 3 years intensive program, involving training in wide range of dental procedures and academics.

UG Program

Oral Medicine and Radiology involves explaining to the BDS students about the awareness of medically compromised patients and importance of intra and extra oral radiographs under supervision.

Interns & CDE

In the Internship program students get exposure of ample number of patients. They gain confidence and good command in Intra-oral and Extra-oral Examination of the patients and also treating the patients by non surgical procedures.

Course Highlights

First-year

  • Theoretical exposure of all applied sciences.
  • Pre-clinical exercises such as forensic odontology methods (age estimation).
  • Daily OPD and special training in clinical examination & diagnosis of Oral & Maxillofacial pathologies, Chair-side investigations & radiographic diagnostic procedures.
  • Submission of thesis synopsis within 6 months of joining.
  • Submission of library dissertation at completion of first year.
  • Participation in seminars, journal club reviews, conferences and conventions.
  • Evaluation-Internal assessment exam of Basic Sciences.

Second-year

  • More involvement in Seminars, Clinical case presentations, Journal clubs, Inter Departmental meets, workshops, conferences and research works.
  • Peripheral postings in Oncology, General medicine, General surgery, Dermatology and Radiology departments.
  • Evidence based learning, presentations at National level conferences, Workshops, Conventions.
  • Writing scientific manuscripts.

Third-year

  • Specialized diagnostic procedures like tobacco cessation, biopsies, oral cancer screening, oro-facial pain management, temporo-mandibular Disorders.
  • Diagnosing and treatment of various orofacial pathologies, orofacial syndromes, oral manifestations in systemic diseases and medically compromised patients.
  • Extraoral radiographic training and interpreting various maxillofacial lesions, TMJ pathologies and salivary gland pathologies by 2D & 3D imaging.
  • Training in research, pedagogy and scientific paper presentations and publications at national and international level.
  • Submission of thesis six months before final exams.
  • Presentation in didactic lectures.
  • Evaluation-Internal assessment examination 3 months before University exams.

Clinical Experience

The three years intensive programme trains the residents in a sequential manner and makes them self -confident.

  • Assessment of Oro-facial pathologies.
  • Orofacial Pain management including Temporo-mandibular Disorders (TMD).
  • Management of Mucosal diseases.
  • Trained in Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
  • Biopsy procedures for different pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions
  • Vital tissue Staining.
  • Intra-oral and Extra-oral Imaging protocols with Interpretation.
  • TENS therapy.
  • Basic Life Support and Emergency Management.
  • Management of Special health care need patients.

Didactic Components

Lectures
Department encourages residents to attend guest lectures and integrated lectures by multidisciplinary teams on selected topics to strengthen the training.

Journal club review
The journal club review meeting is held once a week. All residents & staff members participate actively.

Seminar
The seminars are held twice a week covering full syllabus concerned to department starting from basic subjects and proceeding towards advancements.

Symposium
Symposium is held once in a month covering all the controversial topics of subject.

Inter departmental meeting
To encourage integration among various specialties, inter departmental meetings are chaired by the dean with all heads of post graduate departments and residents once in a month.

Teaching skills
Residents actively take part in under graduate teaching programs either in the form of lectures or group discussions.

Research and Publications

During the 3 year residency, each resident is expected to complete at least one detailed Research, one Library Dissertation and one Publication. The residents are encouraged to take up more than one research. In addition to the above activities, the residents are required to attend Specialty related Conferences and Workshops along with presentation of Papers and Posters.
