Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes inpatient and outpatient care, dentoalveolar surgery, surgical reconstruction of bone and soft tissues, dental implants to replace one or more missing teeth, treatment of traumatic injuries to the face, jaws, mouth, and teeth, treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease, diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment oral cancer and other diseases in the maxillofacial region, reconstructive and corrective facial plastic surgery (orthognathic and craniofacial surgery), treatment of cleft lip and palate and other congenital skeletal defects, diagnosis and surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (snoring), micro neurosurgical repair of facial and trigeminal nerve disorders, and facial aesthetic surgery procedures to enhance facial appearance and function. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is responsible for the didactic and clinical instruction in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Local Anesthesia and Pain Control for undergraduate dental students (BDS) and has a full-scope postgraduate residency training program (MDS) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. There is ample exposure to Head and Neck Oncology as well as Facial Aesthetic Surgery. The Department is fully committed to patient care, student and resident education, service to the community, and the profession of continuing dental and medical education, scientific research, and publication.

Services
Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a 3-year intensive program leading to a Dental Council of India-recognized Masters Degree in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and competency in a wide range of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgical procedures.

UG Program
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery forms a significant part of the Third & Fourth year of the bachelor program in Dentistry (BDS) involving both didactic and clinical learning, first under the supervision and later independently.

Course Highlights

First-year
In the first year of PG program residents are given basic training about ot etiquettes, gowning and gloving, suturing, knotting, iv/im injections, wound care and dressing, catheterization and drains management, airway management, tracheostomy care. Residents are given dissection training on cadaver. Didactic training on subjects of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, general pathology, pharmacology, oral and maxillofacial pathology, radiology and oral surgeries principles, seminars on applied basic science. They perform simple extractions and assist senior residents.a research project is assigned in the first year of post-graduation, that needs to be submitted to the university after performing the preliminary study.
Second-year
The residents work to perform procedures at par in the concerned specialty. During their term in the Department, the residents are involved in various procedures like transalveolar extractions, biopsy, cyst enucleation and assisting in all cases of senior residents and faculty. They are getting training in other concerned medical and surgical speciality and onco posting at bikaner. A research project is assigned in the second year of post-graduation, as a Library Dissertation, that need to be submitted to the university after a thorough review of the topic.


Third-year
Third-year residents function as senior residents assuming the responsibility for the overall function of the department. Chief residents are involved in various procedures as an assistant or as a chief operating maxillofacial surgeon. The research project assigned in the first year of post-graduation needs to be completed by third year and submitted to the university after performing a complete research study.

Seminars
Regular seminars are held covering the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, spread over three years beginning with the basics and advancing to complex clinical topics.
Journal Review
Regular review of classic articles, current articles of importance, and advancements in oral and maxillofacial surgery done at a meeting of the residents and faculty.
Case Presentation
Regular presentation of interesting cases is done by the residents in a meeting with the residents and the faculty.
Teaching Rounds
Residents and faculty hold teaching rounds during which in-patients and upcoming complicated cases are reviewed.
Conferences & Publications
During the 3 year residency, each resident is expected to complete at least one detailed Research, one Library Dissertation and one Publication. The residents are encouraged to take up more than one research. In addition to the above activities, the residents are required to attend specialty related Conferences and Workshops along with presentation of Papers and Posters.
