Program Description

At the postgraduate level, MDS program is offered to make the candidate proficient in routine cytological and histopathological procedures. The Post Graduate program comprises training of three years of Oral Pathology and Microbiology and has extended to even include Forensic Odontology in its curriculum.Knowledge about recent sophisticated instrumentation and advances in our specialty are also imparted.

First year

  • Basic Slide Examination
  • UG slide diagrams on general histology
  • UG oral histology slide diagrams
  • Tooth carvings of permanent and deciduous teeth with diagrams and description
  • Ground section preparation and interpretation
  • Decalcified section preparation, staining and interpretation
  • Museum preparation

Second Year

  • Grossing techniques and details of biopsy
  • Tissue processing
  • Section cutting
  • Hematoxylin and Eosin staining including staining procedure and photographs
  • Cytological smear preparation, staining and interpretation
  • Case history records and Clinicopathological Discussion
  • Hematological investigations, procedures and interpretation

Third Year

  • Techniques – centrifugation, electrophoresis, spectrophotometry,radioactive techniques and others culture media Preparation
  • Staining methods for bacteria
  • Staining methods for fungi
  • Laboratory diagnosis of viruses
  • Other diagnostic methods in microbiology
  • Molecular biology and other laboratory techniques
  • Patient slides with diagrams and reports
  • Histopathological features and differential diagnosis of cases discussed

The three years intensive program train the residents in a sequential manner and make them self -confident for:

Didactic components

Lectures
Department encourages residents to attend guest lectures and integrated lectures by multidisciplinary teams on selected topics to strengthen the training.

Journal club review
The journal club review meeting is held once a week. All residents & staff members participate actively.

Seminar
The seminars are held twice a week covering full syllabus concerned to department starting from basic subjects and proceeding towards advancements.

Symposium
Symposium is held once in a month covering all the controversial topics of subject.

Inter departmental meeting
To encourage integration among various specialties, inter departmental meetings are chaired by the dean with all Heads of post graduate departments and residents once in a month.

Teaching skills
Residents actively take part in under graduate teaching programs either in the form of lectures or group discussions.

Research and Publications

During the 3 year residency, each resident is expected to complete at least one detailed Research, one Library Dissertation and one Publication. The residents are encouraged to take up more than one research. In addition to the above activities, the residents are required to attend Specialty related Conferences and Workshops along with presentation of Papers and Posters.
