Program Description

Periodontology residency (MDS Periodontology) is   3 year Program approved by Rajasthan state and recognized by Dental Council of India; permitted to take 3 seats/year since 2012. Residency program nurtures  the   budding Periodontist  not only with  theoretical aspects  but also includes  rigorous clinical training  in terms of  Preventive Periodontics, Periodontal regeneration (Soft &Hard tissue), Implants (conventional to immediate as well as complication management), sinus and ridge augmentation, Endo -perio lesions management, LASERS in Periodontics, Smile designing etc, by eminent and  highly  experienced teaching faculty .

Program Highlights

First year

  • Theoretical and clinical exposure of all applied sciences.
  • Practical training and handling Medical emergencies and Basic Life Support devices.
  • Pre-clinical exercises.
  • Special training in clinical examination, diagnosis, routine periodontal and minor periodontal surgical procedures etc. and execution of same.
  • Submission of library dissertation at completion of first year.
  • Submission of thesis synopsis within 6 months of joining.
  • Participation in seminars, journal club reviews, conferences and conventions.
  • Evaluation-Internal assessment exam of Basic Sciences.

Second year

  • Residents gain more confidence by doing routine surgical, periodontalplastic and esthetic procedures, furcation, diastema closure management etc..
  • More involvement in clinical case presentations, Inter Departmental meets, workshops,        conferences and research works.
  • Understanding and treating various periodontal defects by hard tissue regeneration.
  • Regular guidance and Internal Evaluation yearly.

 

Third year

  • Practice of Inter disciplinary cases.
  • Special experience of Ridge and Sinus Augmentation, osseous regenerative and resective surgery
  • Management of Implant Cases (conventional to immediate) including placements and Prosthetic work.
  • Submission of thesis six months before final exams.
  • Presentation in didactic lectures/ posters /scientific presentations at national conferences.
  • Evaluation-Internal assessment examination, 3 months before University exams.

Clinical Experience

The three years intensive program train the residents in a sequential manner and make them self -confident in:

  • Clinical Diagnosis,
  • Non Surgical Periodontal Therapy ( Scaling and Root Planing)
  • Clinical Case Discussions with treatment planning
  • Minor Periodontal Surgical Procedures assistance followed by under observation / independently performed.
  • Assistance in Flap Surgeries including regeneration ( 10 cases individually )
  • Flap Surgeries under observation.
  • Flap surgeries independently including regeneration.
  • Observation/ Assistance of conventional Implant therapy
  • Implant insertion under observation.
  • Implant independently
  • Periodontal Plastic & Aesthetic treatment assistance
  • Periodontal Plastic & Aesthetic treatment under observation
  • Periodontal, Implant, interdisciplinary complications assistance and management.

 

Didactic components

Lectures
Department encourages residents to attend guest lectures and integrated lectures by multidisciplinary teams on selected topics to strengthen the training.

Journal club review
The journal club review meeting is held once a week. All residents & staff members participate actively.

Seminar
The seminars are held twice a week covering full syllabus concerned to department starting from basic subjects and proceeding towards advancements.

Inter departmental meeting
To encourage integration among various specialties, inter departmental meetings are chaired by the Dean with all Heads of post graduate departments and residents once in a month.

Teaching skills
Residents actively take part in under graduate teaching programs either in the form of lectures or group discussions.

Research and Publications

During the 3 year residency, each resident is expected to complete at least one detailed Research, one Library Dissertation and one Publication. The residents are encouraged to take up more than one research. In addition to the above activities, the residents are required to attend speciality related Conferences and Workshops along with presentation of Papers and Posters.
